‘Man and emotions in social studies and humanities’

Warsaw, 13-14 June 2014

In recent years human emotionality has become an issue that attract attention of various scientific audiences. Emotions will no longer be a domain of artists, psychologists, and other specialists of intimacy. The social, cultural and historical dimensions of emotions are constantly emphasized as an important context for understanding the diverse patterns of feelings, modes of emotional expression, and their transformations over the centuries. However, although we already have devoted some attention to emotions, we still encounter new or never discussed problems that deserve a serious approach.

The aim of the conference is to put the question of emotions in a broad, interdisciplinary perspective. We invite scholars active in the area of social sciences and humanities – PhD students, young doctors, as well as graduate students. The conference has been designed as an interdisciplinary reflection on the role of emotions in culture and society, and the ways and means of their expression.

Below you can find the suggested issues on which you can focus in your papers, but we are open to other approaches and we encourage you to submit your own ideas.

We propose the following topics:

·         significance and the role of emotions in cultural practices;

·         expression and articulation of emotions in historical perspective;

·         emotions in public space and private life;

·         the role of emotions in the construction of social attitudes;

·         social patterns of feeling;

·         individual or collective – how to research emotions in social life;

·         the role of emotions in political discourse;

·         emotions in literature – between convention and reality;

·         narratives about positive and negative emotions and their myth-making, political, and social functions;

·         the forms and means of emotional expression in the fine arts;

·      emotions and communication - verbal and nonverbal means of emotional expression;

·         emotions and gender;

·         emotions in archaeological research – about the presence and the perceptibility of human moods and feelings in the light of the excavation discoveries;

·         emotions and feelings as research categories.

A completed application form and an abstract (1000-2000 characters) should be sent by e-mail to doktoranci.wh@uw.edu.pl before 1st May 2014.

The conference fee is 10 EUR.

We anticipate a post-conference publication.

The conference is organized in cooperation with the Doctoral Council of the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw and the Students’ Scientific Association of Historians at the University of Warsaw.

Konferencja naukowa "Człowiek i emocje w badaniach humanistycznych i społecznych"

Koło Naukowe Doktorantów Wydziału Historycznego UW zaprasza na międzynarodową konferencję naukową pt. "Człowiek i emocje w badaniach humanistycznych i społecznych" (Warszawa, 13-14 czerwca 2014 r.).

Ludzka emocjonalność od lat cieszy się coraz większym zainteresowaniem przedstawicieli nauk humanistycznych i społecznych. Emocje nie są już domeną artystów, psychologów i innych specjalistów od intymności. Coraz częściej podkreślany jest społeczny i kulturowy wymiar emocji, znaczenie kontekstu historycznego dla zrozumienia zróżnicowanych wzorców odczuwania i sposobów ekspresji oraz ich przemian na przestrzeni dziejów. Jednak, mimo że tematyce emocji poświęcono w humanistyce wiele uwagi, w dalszym ciągu napotykamy problemy, które nie doczekały się omówienia lub zasługują na nowe ujęcie.

Celem konferencji jest przyjrzenie się problematyce emocji w szerokiej, interdyscyplinarnej perspektywie. Do udziału zapraszamy przedstawicieli nauk humanistycznych i społecznych – doktorantów, młodych doktorów, a także studentów. Z założenia będzie to spotkanie badaczy reprezentujących różne środowiska naukowe. Zależy nam na interdyscyplinarnej refleksji nad rolą emocji w kulturze i społeczeństwie oraz nad środkami i sposobami ich wyrazu.

Zamieszczone niżej punkty stanowią propozycję zagadnień, na których można skoncentrować swoje wystąpienie, jesteśmy jednak otwarci na inne ujęcie problematyki emocji i zapraszamy do przedstawienia własnych pomysłów.

Proponujemy następującą tematykę:

• znaczenie i rola emocji w praktykach kulturowych;

• ekspresja i artykulacja emocji w ujęciu historycznym;

• emocje w przestrzeni publicznej i życiu prywatnym;

• rola emocji w kształtowaniu postaw społecznych;

• społeczne wzorce odczuwania;

• jednostkowe a zbiorowe: jak badać emocje w życiu społecznym;

• rola emocji w dyskursie politycznym;

• emocje w literaturze – między konwencją a rzeczywistością;

• narracje o pozytywnych i negatywnych emocjach oraz ich funkcje mitotwórcze, polityczne, społeczne itp.;

• ekspresje i środki wyrazu emocji w sztukach pięknych;

• emocje a komunikacja – werbalne i pozawerbalne sposoby przekazywania uczuć;

• emocje a gender;

• emocje w badaniach archeologicznych, czyli o obecności i uchwytności ludzkich nastrojów i doznań w świetle odkryć wykopaliskowych;

• uczucia i emocje jako kategorie badawcze.

Podstawą kwalifikacji na konferencję jest abstrakt wystąpienia. Długość abstraktu powinna wynosić od 1000 do 2000 znaków. Wypełniony formularz zgłoszeniowy wraz z abstraktem prosimy przesłać do 1 maja 2014 roku na adres doktoranci.wh@uw.edu.pl.

Opłata konferencyjna wynosi 30 zł. Przewidujemy wydanie publikacji pokonferencyjnej. 

Konferencja organizowana jest we współpracy z Radą Doktorantów Wydziału Historycznego UW oraz Studenckim Kołem Naukowym Historyków UW.
