‘Man
and emotions in social studies and humanities’
Warsaw, 13-14 June 2014
In recent years human emotionality has become an
issue that attract attention of various scientific audiences. Emotions will no
longer be a domain of artists, psychologists, and other specialists of intimacy.
The social, cultural and historical dimensions of emotions are constantly emphasized
as an important context for understanding the diverse patterns of feelings,
modes of emotional expression, and their transformations over the centuries.
However, although we already have devoted some attention to emotions, we still
encounter new or never discussed problems that deserve a serious approach.
The aim of the conference is to put the
question of emotions in a broad, interdisciplinary perspective. We invite scholars
active in the area of social sciences and humanities – PhD students, young
doctors, as well as graduate students. The conference has been designed as an
interdisciplinary reflection on the role of emotions in culture and society,
and the ways and means of their expression.
Below you can find the suggested issues on
which you can focus in your papers, but we are open to other approaches and we
encourage you to submit your own ideas.
We propose the following topics:

significance
and the role of emotions in cultural practices;
·
expression
and articulation of emotions in historical perspective;
·
emotions
in public space and private life;
·
the
role of emotions in the construction of social attitudes;
·
social
patterns of feeling;
·
individual
or collective – how to research emotions in social life;
·
the
role of emotions in political discourse;
·
emotions
in literature – between convention and reality;
·
narratives
about positive and negative emotions and their myth-making, political, and
social functions;
·
the
forms and means of emotional expression in the fine arts;
· emotions
and communication - verbal and nonverbal means of emotional expression;
·
emotions
and gender;
·
emotions
in archaeological research – about the presence and the perceptibility of human
moods and feelings in the light of the excavation discoveries;
·
emotions
and feelings as research categories.
A completed application form and an abstract (1000-2000
characters) should be sent by e-mail to doktoranci.wh@uw.edu.pl before 1st May
2014.

The conference fee is 10 EUR.
We anticipate a post-conference
publication.
The conference is organized in
cooperation with the Doctoral Council of the Faculty of History at the University
of Warsaw and the Students’ Scientific Association of Historians at the
University of Warsaw.
